An exceptionally abstract reverse
Lot 1885
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Gold, 21 mm, 6.90 g, 1 h), 'Derived Gordian Group C'. [...]ΠJ ICIVNNO Laureate, draped and cuirassed imperial bust to left, seen from behind. Rev. PS O ICCV Fides standing front, head to left, holding two stylized signa. A lovely coin of beautiful abstract style. Light traces of mounting, otherwise, good fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

What a charming reverse this is! The Germanic artist clearly had Fides with two signa in mind (perhaps derived from an aureus of Gallienus or Claudius II), but he crafted a beautiful abstract version of her with a conical body and two signa decorated with wreaths and ending in spear heads. The obverse, on the other hand, is a direct copy of lots 1883-1884 above.
